Turkey: A proud moment for Indians with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) team making its first ever appearance in the World Rafting Championship (WRF) which will be held in Tunceli here from June 8 to 13.
The athletes Gimnar Singh, Naveen Kumar, Akshat Kumar and Panne Lal from ABVIMAS will be representing the country at the WRF.
According to the event list, the championship comprises downriver competition of 600 metre sprint, and 1.2 km slalom and cross country.
Over 20 countries will be participating in the event.
Coach of the Indian team, Colonel Neeraj Rana said that the team had secured first place in the national rafting championship held on the River Sutlej, the previous year and is confident of winning this championship too after going through warm-up runs.
The ABVIMAS team had reached Tunceli on Sunday, June 9, and got into warm-up sessions. The event, however, has begun from today.
The event organised by the World Rafting Federation in collaboration with the Turkish Rafting Federation will be held in the River Munzur which is said to be 36-km-long.
