Hundreds of international students in the US, including many from India, have received sudden emails informing them of visa cancellations. Without prior warning, they now face immediate deportation.
This wave of removals is part of “Catch and Revoke,” a new initiative by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The program leverages artificial intelligence to track and flag students allegedly engaging in activism linked to extremist groups. In just three weeks, over 300 student visas have been revoked under the banner of national security.
A key aspect of this crackdown is AI-driven social media surveillance. The State Department monitors likes, shares, and comments, using them as potential evidence for visa termination. Even minimal online engagement with flagged content can lead to deportation.
Emails sent to affected students cite Section 221(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, warning that failure to leave could result in detention, fines, or forced removal. Departing students must confirm their exit via the CBP Home App.
Legal experts and university officials have condemned the move, arguing it stifles free speech and sets a dangerous precedent for AI-driven surveillance. As fears grow among international students, advocacy groups are exploring legal options. Meanwhile, students are urged to tread cautiously online, as a single click could determine their fate.
