New Delhi: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the Gansu-Qinghai border region in northwestern China, causing significant devastation and loss of lives. The death toll from the earthquake has surpassed 100 people, according to state news agency Xinhua. The quake occurred at 11:59 pm local time on Monday.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located 102 km west-southwest of Lanzhou, China, with a depth of 35 km (21.75 miles), as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). The tremors were felt in parts of Gansu and the neighboring Qinghai province.
China’s national commission for disaster prevention, reduction, and relief, along with the Ministry of emergency management, has activated a level-IV disaster relief emergency. A dispatched work team is assessing the impact of the disaster in the affected areas and guiding local relief operations. Rescue operations are currently underway in the aftermath of the earthquake.
