A 14-year-old girl from Bangladesh who had run away from home last year after failing an examination has been reunited with her parents following a rescue operation by the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar police.
According to officials, the minor was brought to India by an acquaintance and was initially taken to Nadiad in Gujarat before later being moved to Naigaon in Vasai.
Trafficked after leaving home
Investigators said the girl had left her home in Bangladesh after feeling distressed about failing an exam. During that time, she came in contact with a woman known to her who offered help.
Authorities said the girl was then transported across the border and moved between different locations before being found in the Vasai area.
Social service organisations eventually learned about her situation and alerted the police.
Rescue operation and arrests
The girl was rescued in July 2025 through a joint effort involving the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of the Mira-Bhayandar Vasai-Virar police along with social organisations including Harmony Foundation and Exodus Road India Foundation.
Dr A. Mathai, founder-chairman of Harmony Foundation, expressed relief after the girl was safely reunited with her parents.
Following the rescue on July 26 last year, police investigations led to the arrest of 10 individuals suspected of involvement in the trafficking network.
Call for greater awareness
Activists involved in the rescue said the case highlights the importance of timely intervention and vigilance in cases involving missing children.
They also urged parents and communities to maintain open communication with young people and provide emotional support during difficult times.
Authorities emphasised that continued awareness and coordinated efforts are essential to prevent trafficking and protect vulnerable children.
