Biden Commends Modi’s Historic Visits to Poland and Ukraine During Phone Call
US President Joe Biden, in a recent telephonic conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, praised the latter’s “historic visits” to Poland and Ukraine, highlighting Modi’s message of peace and ongoing humanitarian support for Ukraine. The White House confirmed this in a statement, noting that the two leaders also discussed the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings in September.
Commendation for Diplomatic Efforts
President Biden lauded PM Modi for being the first Indian Prime Minister in decades to visit Poland and Ukraine, recognising his efforts to promote peace amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The White House statement emphasised Modi’s contributions, including India’s humanitarian support to Ukraine, particularly in its energy sector.
The leaders reaffirmed their mutual support for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, in line with international law and the UN Charter. They also discussed the importance of regional cooperation, with a focus on contributing to peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting their commitment to working together through forums such as the Quad.
Modi’s Message of Peace
PM Modi briefed President Biden on his recent visits, reiterating India’s longstanding position favouring dialogue and diplomacy as the means to resolve conflicts. Modi’s visit to Ukraine marked a significant diplomatic gesture, with discussions centred on India’s willingness to play an active role in facilitating peace.
During his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modi reaffirmed India’s support for a peaceful resolution, stating, “India was never neutral, we have always been on the side of peace.” This message aligns with India’s consistent advocacy for peace and diplomacy in resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict, which has persisted since 2022.
White House Statement and Global Impact
The White House later reiterated the importance of global cooperation in supporting Ukraine’s peace efforts, particularly those aligned with President Zelenskyy’s vision for a “just peace.” John Kirby, the White House National Security Communications Advisor, expressed Washington’s openness to any nation, including India, willing to contribute to peace efforts starting from Zelenskyy’s proposals.
Following the conversation, PM Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the detailed exchange of views on regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine, and reaffirmed India’s support for the swift return of peace and stability.
Strengthening India-US Partnership
In addition to the discussions on Ukraine, PM Modi and President Biden reviewed the progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. They emphasised that the partnership is not only beneficial to both countries but also to the broader global community. The leaders also expressed shared concerns over the situation in Bangladesh, reflecting their commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
