An explosion rocked the vicinity outside the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) office in Karachi, according to police sources as reported by ARY News. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, as confirmed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South, Sajid Sadozai. Responding swiftly, the bomb disposal squad was summoned to the scene to assess the situation.
According to SSP Sadozai, the explosive device was concealed within a shopping bag placed adjacent to the wall of the ECP office in Karachi’s red zone area. Notably, no ball bearings were found within the explosive material.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) promptly reacted to the incident, seeking reports from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South and the District Monitoring Officer. Both officials were directed to furnish immediate reports regarding the incident.
A subsequent report from the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) revealed that the explosion was caused by a ‘homemade’ bomb utilizing approximately 400 grams of explosives. Noteworthy findings at the blast site included a time device and a 12-volt battery.
According to the BDS report, “The detonator and roughly 400 grams of explosives were obliterated in the blast.” It was also noted that the homemade bomb was encased in a soft container. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the explosion.
This incident occurred in Pakistan ahead of the upcoming general elections slated for February 8, aimed at electing members of the 16th National Assembly.
