Canadian woman arrested for attempting to smuggle meth disguised as Christmas gifts

A Canadian woman was arrested at Auckland Airport on Sunday for allegedly attempting to smuggle 10.2 kilograms (22 pounds) of methamphetamine into New Zealand, disguised as Christmas presents. The drugs, worth up to $2.2 million, were found in the woman’s carry-on luggage upon her arrival from Vancouver.

New Zealand Customs officials revealed the drugs were wrapped in bright red Christmas paper and hidden inside a duffel bag. The woman, whose identity has not been released, faces charges of importing and possessing a Class A controlled drug for supply.

Customs manager Paul Williams emphasized that criminal groups often try to exploit the busy travel season, but stated that Customs remains vigilant, even during peak periods. He also mentioned the growing risk of drug shipments from North America.

Last year, New Zealand intercepted a record 713 kg of methamphetamine concealed in Canadian maple syrup containers. Six suspects were arrested in an operation involving New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster stressed the importance of international collaboration to disrupt organized crime and protect communities from the harmful effects of the global drug trade.
