Preparations are underway in northeast China’s Harbin City for the 38th Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Expo, with construction beginning on one of its most striking centrepieces — a 23.8-metre-high snowman. The colossal structure, fondly referred to as “Mr Snowman”, is expected to become a major attraction at the world-renowned winter festival.
A massive winter build begins
Snow sculptors estimate that constructing the towering installation will take three to four days, involving the use of nearly 5,000 cubic metres of snow. Workers have already begun shaping the giant figure, which will stand as one of the most photographed landmarks of the expo.
The annual Sun Island festival is a global highlight in winter tourism, drawing visitors from across China and abroad to experience Harbin’s world-famous ice and snow culture.
Expo to showcase more than 260 sculptures
This year’s expo spans 1.5 million square metres, transforming the island into a landscape of artistic snow creations. More than 260 snow sculptures of varying sizes and themes will be displayed, created by teams of skilled artists and international participants.
To improve both design precision and visual impact, organisers have incorporated 3D modelling technology, allowing sculptors to refine structures, proportions and details before carving them into snow.
Festival to run through winter
The Sun Island International Snow Sculpture Expo is expected to continue until February next year, coinciding with Harbin’s peak tourist season. Each winter, millions travel to Heilongjiang Province to witness its elaborate snow architecture, immersive night illuminations, and dramatic sub-zero artistry.
Local authorities anticipate a strong visitor turnout this season, boosted by improved festival experiences, updated installations, and renewed global interest in winter tourism.
