A couple in China has been arrested on suspicion of faking a traffic accident to secure insurance compensation after the woman suffered a serious chest injury caused by her partner during a prank.
Injury during prank leads to staged accident
According to the South China Morning Post, the case dates back to June 2024 when the couple, identified by the surnames Wang and Lan, were playing outside a relative’s home in Panzhihua city. Wang allegedly jumped onto Lan’s back, causing a fracture to her chest bone. The pair did not seek immediate medical help and reportedly searched online for treatment costs.
Police said the couple, concerned about expenses, allegedly decided to stage a car accident to secure insurance funds.
Fake crash staged at remote intersection
Around an hour after the injury, Wang drove Lan to a quiet intersection, laid her against the rear of the car, and made it appear as though she had been struck. Investigators said the couple hid their relationship when reporting the incident.
Lan was admitted to hospital, and Wang allegedly persuaded the insurer to advance tens of thousands of yuan for her treatment. After she was discharged, Lan filed a claim for over 200,000 yuan (approximately USD 28,000).
Investigation reveals inconsistencies
The insurance company later flagged multiple irregularities, including the couple’s close association and inconsistencies in their statements. Police found no impact marks on the vehicle and observed that the supposed crash site was isolated and unsuitable for such an incident.
Further evidence included photographs showing Lan leaning against a pillow in what officers described as an “unnatural” position. Investigators also uncovered a history of disputes between the couple.
Authorities concluded that the accident had been staged and arrested both suspects on insurance fraud charges. If convicted, Wang and Lan could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 200,000 yuan.
Social media reactions
The case has drawn strong criticism on Chinese social media. One user wrote, “These two have no legal awareness; they are foolish criminals.” Another said, “People like them are destroying social trust. Police and insurers waste huge resources on such cases.”
