A deeply moving love story from China has resurfaced online after being highlighted during the Fifth Annual Han-style Collective Wedding Ceremony. The tale traces the extraordinary journey of Liu Ximei, who survived the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake as a child, and Liang Zhibin, the young soldier who rescued her from beneath the rubble. Their lives, separated by time and distance, intertwined again more than a decade later — not through tragedy, but through love.
A rescue that changed two lives
In May 2008, a powerful earthquake struck Sichuan province, claiming tens of thousands of lives and leaving entire towns in ruins. Among the first responders was 22-year-old soldier Liang Zhibin, deployed for emergency operations. While combing through debris, he spotted 11-year-old Liu trapped on the second floor of a collapsed building, pinned beneath steel bars and bricks.
Liang and his team dug relentlessly for nearly four hours, managing to free the injured child and rush her to hospital. Liu later returned to her hometown in Hunan. Though grateful, she remembered only a faint silhouette of the man who had saved her.
“For many years, I could not remember what his face looked like. All I had was a blurry image of a figure in my mind,” Liu told the South China Morning Post.
Fate intervenes twelve years later
In 2020, Liu, then 22, was dining with her parents at a restaurant in Changsha when her mother noticed a familiar-looking man sitting nearby.
“He looks just like the soldier who saved you,” she said.
Liu gathered her courage, walked up to him and asked softly:
“Brother Liang? Is that you?”
Liang was stunned. “She had changed so much, I did not recognise her at all,” he recalled.
The two exchanged numbers and began talking. Their initial conversations about the past gradually evolved into a deeper connection.
Liu later confessed her feelings:
“I do not love him out of gratitude. It was through spending time together that I realised this is someone I can entrust my life to.”
From saviour to soulmate
The couple eventually married, embracing a life woven together by courage, destiny and affection. Liang described Liu as the guiding light in his life:
“She is a ray of light. Whenever I feel low, her positivity lifts me up. Back then, saving people was my duty. Now I truly love her. These are two different things.”
Their story is being celebrated once again as part of the Han-style collective wedding, capturing global attention for its rare blend of heroism and heartfelt romance.
A love story that continues to inspire
Years after their first meeting under life-threatening circumstances, Liu and Liang’s relationship stands as a testament to how fate can bring two people together in the most unexpected ways. What began as an act of duty evolved into a lifelong bond — a narrative that has touched hearts worldwide.
