A contractual agreement signed by Diana Spencer approximately two years before her marriage to the then Prince of Wales is set to be auctioned in the United Kingdom, with expectations of fetching a considerable sum. Completed in May 1979 when she was 17, the document was inked by Diana herself and was an application for the elite nanny agency Solve Your Problem Ltd.

According to reports from the BBC, she purportedly listed her birth year as 1960 instead of 1961, possibly to expedite job placement or secure higher pay.

Anticipated to sell for around $10,000, this contract is believed to be Princess Diana’s earliest official employment agreement. Andrew Stowe of Auctioneum Ltd remarked on its significance, highlighting the profound moment of securing one’s first job, particularly for someone who would later become one of the most renowned figures of the 20th century.

Discussing the discrepancy in Diana’s birth date, Stowe suggested it might have been a deliberate act to portray herself as older, potentially increasing her chances of obtaining employment or negotiating better wages. However, he also acknowledged the possibility of it being a mere oversight.

The contract, void of specifics regarding job preferences or salary expectations, simply expressed Diana’s eagerness for employment “as soon as possible.” It was completed shortly after her relocation to London as a teenage Lady Diana Spencer, with her temporary address noted as Cadogan Place SW1, before she settled into her own flat at Colherne Court, Kensington, a few months later.

This document is believed to mark Princess Diana’s initial formal engagement for various short-term positions such as nanny, mother’s help, and childcare provider. Prior to this, in 1978, she had informally worked for acquaintances and relatives, some of whom are listed as references in the contract.

Princess Diana, celebrated for her humanitarian efforts and closely followed private life, tragically passed away in a car accident in August 1997, leaving behind her sons Prince William and Prince Harry, who were then just 15 and 12 years old, respectively.
