A brief visit by actor and environmental campaigner Leonardo DiCaprio to Indonesia’s Leuser Ecosystem in 2016 drew international attention to one of the world’s most important remaining habitats for threatened wildlife.
A rare refuge for four endangered species
Spread across about 6.5 million acres of Sumatra, the Leuser Ecosystem is among the few landscapes where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, rhinos and elephants still live within the wider connected forest.
During his visit, DiCaprio met conservationists and observed wildlife, including elephants and orangutans. Photographs and messages shared online quickly brought the remote rainforest to the attention of millions.
The visit came as conservation groups were warning about the growing pressure on forests and peatlands from agricultural expansion, logging, mining and roads.
Palm oil becomes central to conservation concerns
Palm oil production became a major focus of DiCaprio’s comments after the trip. Indonesia is one of the world’s largest palm oil producers, but conservation organisations have raised concerns about plantations being developed in areas containing valuable forests and peatlands.
The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation had also announced support for organisations working to protect the Leuser Ecosystem and establish a sanctuary for its threatened megafauna.
For conservationists, maintaining connected forests is crucial. Species such as elephants require large areas and wildlife corridors to move safely between habitats.
Why the rainforest matters beyond wildlife
The importance of Leuser extends beyond endangered animals. Its forests and peatlands store significant amounts of carbon, while the ecosystem’s watersheds provide resources for communities and help protect surrounding areas from floods and landslides.
DiCaprio’s remarks, however, drew a mixed response from Indonesian authorities. Environment and forestry officials acknowledged the sincerity of his concerns but challenged some of his public statements. Immigration authorities also warned at the time that provocative comments could affect his future entry into Indonesia.
The episode highlighted the complex challenge of protecting Leuser, where conservation, livelihoods and economic development intersect.
