A scuba diver’s viral Reddit post has reignited concerns over plastic pollution after sharing a striking image of a bag filled with trash collected from a lake.
“Another dive, another load of trash”
Posting on the r/DeTrashed subreddit, the diver expressed frustration over the persistent waste found in natural water bodies. The image shows a large haul of discarded items retrieved during a river cleanup.
Among the objects were watches, sunglasses, golf balls, scissors, pliers, coins, mobile phones and several disposable vapes. The volume and variety of waste shocked fellow Reddit users.
Many of the collected items were made from plastic, a material that does not biodegrade naturally. Instead, it breaks down into microplastics — tiny particles that can enter water systems and potentially impact wildlife and human health.
Environmental impact concerns
Larger plastic items pose additional risks, as animals may ingest them or become entangled. Microplastics can also accumulate in soil and water, affecting plant growth and aquatic ecosystems.
Disposable vapes drew particular criticism. These devices often contain plastic components, lithium batteries and electronic parts, requiring proper e-waste disposal. Environmental observers have warned that improper disposal of such products contributes to both plastic and electronic waste challenges.
Online reactions
The post sparked widespread discussion. One Reddit user wrote that disposable vapes are among the most frustrating items found during cleanups because they must be handled as electronic waste rather than regular rubbish.
Environmental advocates say posts like this help raise awareness about pollution in lakes and rivers and encourage community-led cleanup efforts.
Reducing single-use plastic consumption, properly disposing of electronic items and participating in local cleanup drives are among the actions experts recommend to protect fragile aquatic ecosystems.
