Images of former US President Donald Trump seemingly dozing during Pope Francis’ funeral quickly flooded social media on Saturday, drawing a storm of backlash. Trump, 78, attended the Vatican service alongside First Lady Melania Trump and Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, seated prominently in the front row.

Photos showing Trump with his eyes shut during the solemn ceremony went viral, with many accusing him of sleeping through the service. To add to the criticism, Trump broke tradition by donning a blue suit instead of the customary black mourning attire, as reported by Fortune.

Online users slammed his behavior, calling it a “national embarrassment.” One X user remarked, “Trump sleeping at the Pope’s funeral. An embarrassment, as always.” Others pointed out the irony, comparing him to “Sleepy Joe,” a nickname Trump often used for Biden.

Mockery continued with comments highlighting Trump’s inappropriate behavior, noting he was seen texting, laughing, taking calls, and nodding off during the service. “He thinks he’s at Coachella,” joked another user, referencing Trump’s perceived casual attitude.

Seating arrangements placed Trump and Melania between Estonia’s President Alar Karis and Spain’s King Felipe VI, based on the French alphabetical order tradition.

Despite the controversy, Trump did post respectful photos standing before Pope Francis’ coffin earlier in the day. He also held a private meeting with Zelenskyy — their first encounter since their White House clash in 2020.
