When Lee Pillaro matched with Kathrine Warren on a dating app, he did not expect their early conversations to revolve around rescuing a cat. Yet, within their first week of chatting, Warren sent him a photo of a tuxedo cat named Truffles, who had been rescued from a dumpster and was waiting for adoption at the Telluride Humane Society in Colorado.
Warren explained that Truffles was looking for a permanent home. For Pillaro, the moment was decisive. “I knew I needed to give him a good life,” he later told Newsweek.
From shelter to sofa
Truffles, estimated to be eight or nine years old and missing part of one ear, had first been fostered by one of Warren’s colleagues. Despite this, Warren was keen to ensure he found a forever home.
Knowing Pillaro’s love for cats — clearly visible from his dating profile — she shared Truffles’ story with him. Within a month, Pillaro adopted the cat.
“When I adopted him, I was told he was a stray,” Pillaro said. “But he’s too sweet a boy not to have been loved before.”
A home full of warmth
A year later, Truffles is thriving. He now lives with Warren and Pillaro, along with their three other cats. Warren recently shared Truffles’ journey on TikTok, showing his transformation from a shelter cat reaching through enclosure bars to a relaxed pet enjoying affection at home.
In the video, Warren describes Truffles as a “lover” who quickly bonded with Peter, Pillaro’s other cat. The clips show him cuddling, resting and soaking up attention — a far cry from his uncertain beginnings.
“Truffles lives a very relaxed life these days,” Pillaro said. “He mostly sleeps and cuddles. He spends most of his time lying next to his brother or playing with him.”
A story the internet loved
The story resonated widely online, with users praising both the adoption and the relationship it helped build. Comments described Truffles as “so sweet” and called Pillaro “a keeper”.
Warren said she was confident early on that Pillaro was serious about animals. “He had a photo with his cat on his profile,” she said. “He’s proved ever since that he really is a keeper.”
A reminder about adoption
According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), most cats entering shelters are strays, while many others are surrendered due to owners facing unexpected challenges.
Truffles’ story stands as a gentle reminder that adoption not only transforms the lives of animals, but can also bring people together in unexpected and meaningful ways.
