Dunki Route” Migrants Face Heavy Costs as 104 Indians Are Sent Back from US
A US military aircraft touched down at Amritsar airport on Wednesday afternoon, bringing back 104 Indian nationals who had recently arrived at the Mexico-US border. The deportees included 30 people from Punjab and 33 from Gujarat. Sources disclosed that around 15 individuals from both states were apprehended by border authorities after attempting to illegally cross into the US amidst stricter enforcement under President Donald Trump’s administration.
The deportees revealed that they had spent vast amounts—ranging from ₹30 lakh to ₹1 crore—in travel expenses and agent fees in their pursuit of reaching the United States. Most of them had taken the dangerous and often illegal “dunki route,” a path fraught with peril and multiple borders, involving varied modes of transport and unauthorized travel routes.
This route has become notorious for its extreme risks, with many migrants being tricked by deceitful agents promising a passage to the US but leaving them stranded and facing deportation. The growing number of deportations highlights the desperate measures taken by many in search of a better future, despite the increasing risks and uncertainties of illegal immigration.
The trend reflects the rising costs and dangers faced by migrants seeking to bypass legal routes to the US, ultimately paying the price for an uncertain and dangerous journey.
