A man died after falling from an upper-level box seating area at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City, just ahead of a high-profile international friendly match.
According to authorities, the man was reportedly intoxicated and attempted to climb along the exterior of the structure to move from the second level to the first. He lost his balance and fell to the ground floor, resulting in his death.
Incident during pre-event test match
The accident occurred before a friendly match between Mexico and Portugal, which was being held as a test event ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The stadium, previously known as the Azteca Stadium, is scheduled to host the opening ceremony and several matches during the tournament.
Officials confirmed that the incident took place in the suite area, from where the individual fell into a parking section within the stadium premises.
Investigation underway
The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness statements to reconstruct the sequence of events and determine any possible lapses.
A post-mortem examination is also being conducted to confirm the exact cause of death and assess the individual’s condition at the time of the fall.
Safety concerns at major venues
Following the incident, the Mexican Football Federation expressed condolences and reiterated that ensuring spectator safety remains a top priority.
The tragedy has once again highlighted risks associated with unsafe behaviour in large sports venues, especially during crowded events.
Officials are expected to review safety measures as preparations continue for the upcoming World Cup fixtures at the stadium.
