Sydney: A “major incident” has unfolded at Bondi Junction Westfield, a six-level shopping center in Sydney’s eastern area, one of the largest and busiest shopping malls in Australia, resulting in at least four believed fatalities.
Multiple stabbings have been reported, with ambulances rushing to the scene in response to sightings of a male wielding a knife within the premises. Among those receiving treatment for stab wounds are a mother and her baby.
Police have confirmed a male was shot during the altercation, though it remains unclear if he is included in the reported death toll of four. Eyewitnesses describe encountering the alleged attacker brandishing a large blade, followed by police intervention resulting in the individual receiving medical aid after being shot.
The motive behind the attack has yet to be determined. As the center remains under lockdown, shoppers, previously sheltering within stores, are gradually exiting while heavily armed tactical response teams sweep through the area.
Authorities urge the public to steer clear of the vicinity, as streets are congested with emergency vehicles. Eyewitness Brendan Blomeley recalls the panic he experienced with his children upon hearing gunfire, while footage from aerial coverage depicts armed police navigating the rooftop.
Police are slated to provide an update at 5:45 PM local time.
Acting Premier Penny Sharpe shares statement, “I am shocked at reports of multiple casualties at Bondi Junction late this afternoon. My thoughts and those of the NSW government are with the victims, their families and first responders at this time, as well as those who may have witnessed these horrific events. I am receiving regular updates from NSW Police and emergency services, as well as from the Premier’s Department,” Sharpe said.
