The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a public appeal for information on Saeed Tavakoli, an Iranian national accused of having close links with Iran’s powerful military organisation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Tavakoli is also known by the alias Sardar Ammar and is believed to be the chief of IRGC-Qods Force Department 11000, a unit allegedly involved in covert intelligence and overseas operations.

Allegations of global covert operations

US federal authorities allege that Tavakoli directed secret intelligence activities and lethal operations targeting dissidents, journalists, Israeli citizens, and both current and former US government officials. These alleged activities reportedly spanned multiple regions, including Europe and the United States.

Investigators further claim that Tavakoli led an international network linked to attempted attacks in Australia, Greece, Germany, and Mexico, highlighting the transnational nature of the alleged threat.

The FBI has released identifying details to assist the public. Tavakoli is described as a male with grey or white hair, brown eyes, and is known to speak Farsi.

Investigation led from Washington

The case is being handled by the FBI’s Washington, DC field office. Authorities have urged anyone with information on Tavakoli’s whereabouts or activities to contact their nearest FBI office or the closest American embassy or consulate.

Officials said public cooperation could play a critical role in disrupting international networks linked to violence and intimidation.

What is the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps?

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a powerful branch of Iran’s armed forces that answers directly to the country’s Supreme Leader, rather than to elected officials. It was established after the 1979 Iranian Revolution to safeguard the new theocratic regime and counterbalance Iran’s regular military.

Over the decades, the IRGC has expanded significantly, operating its own army, navy, air force, and intelligence wing. It is also deeply involved in Iran’s political system, economy, and regional security strategy.

Its external arm, the Quds Force, is tasked with overseas operations and supporting allied groups abroad. The United States and several other nations have designated parts of the IRGC as a terrorist organisation, citing its alleged involvement in violence beyond Iran’s borders.
