The passing of Pope Francis at 88 has plunged millions of Filipino Catholics into mourning. Affectionately known as Lolo Kiko, his memory lives on in heartfelt stories—especially his daring 2015 trip to storm-battered Tacloban. Braving fierce winds, he held mass amid a typhoon to honor victims of 2013’s deadly Haiyan disaster.

Ignoring safety concerns, Francis arrived to console a grieving crowd. His words were few but powerful: “I stand with you, silently, in sorrow.” One tragic moment overshadowed the event—a steel scaffold collapsed, claiming the life of 27-year-old volunteer Kristel Padasas.

Her father, Paul, later met the Pope in Manila. Through tears, he recalled feeling overwhelmed as the pontiff offered prayers and a blessing. “It was like a surge of divine energy,” he said. “Kristel’s life had meaning, and she fulfilled her mission.”

Across the archipelago, church bells rang and portraits of the pontiff were displayed as people paid tribute. To many, Francis symbolized warmth, simplicity, and inclusiveness. Nursing student Renzie Sarmiento said, “As an LGBTQ+ Catholic, I felt seen. He embraced everyone, without judgment.”

Now, eyes turn to the future. The faithful hope Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, seen as Francis’ ideological heir, might ascend to the papacy. Known for his compassion and digital outreach, Tagle is cherished at home and respected in Rome.

“To witness two Popes in one lifetime—both connected to my daughter—is a blessing,” said Mr. Padasas.
