Oakland: A touching act of compassion by firefighters in California has captured millions of hearts after they rescued a smoke-injured pigeon during a vehicle fire response.
The heartwarming incident took place on July 14 in Oakland, where firefighters from Engine 29 of the Oakland Fire Department had responded to a vehicle fire. As the emergency operation concluded, the crew noticed a pigeon nearby that appeared to be struggling after inhaling smoke.
Firefighters rush to help the injured bird
According to Oakland Firefighters Local 55, the pigeon approached the firefighters on its own, seemingly seeking help after being affected by smoke from the burning vehicle.
One firefighter gently picked up a specially designed animal oxygen mask and carefully placed it over the bird’s beak, allowing it to receive fresh oxygen.
Within moments, the pigeon regained its strength, flapped its wings and flew away safely, prompting applause from those who witnessed the rescue.
The department later shared the video on Instagram, saying the bird appeared to have suffered smoke inhalation but “shortly flew away after clearing out its lungs.”
Video earns millions of views
The emotional rescue quickly went viral across social media platforms, attracting more than 24.6 million views on Instagram alone, while also being widely shared on TikTok, Facebook and X.
Thousands of users praised the firefighters for showing compassion towards an animal that is often overlooked.
One user wrote, “We’re poisoning their air and homes, so the least we can do is help them.” Another commented, “Humanity did pigeons so dirty, and they still want to be close to us.”
Many others applauded the firefighters for treating the bird with the same urgency and care they would show any living being.
Why fire trucks carry animal oxygen masks
While many viewers were surprised by the rescue, specialised oxygen masks for animals are now standard equipment in many fire departments across the United States.
The cone-shaped masks are designed to fit dogs, cats, birds and other animals, allowing firefighters to administer oxygen effectively to pets and wildlife suffering from smoke inhalation.
The brief rescue has become a powerful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference, inspiring millions around the world with its message of compassion.
