McCandless (USA): A fourth-grader in Pennsylvania is being awarded a $1,000 (Rs 70,740) scholarship for growing a ginormous cabbage in 2018.
Lily Ries (9), a student at Peebles Elementary School in Pittsburgh, had grown the cabbage as part of the National Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program, in 2018 when she was in the third grade. Nearly 32,000 students took part in this contest from all over the state. As part of this program, third-grade students are given cabbage seeds of the O.S. Cross variety, known for producing big plants.
Megan Ries, Lily’s mom, stated that her daughter loves to garden and helps maintain the one they have on their deck. The cabbage, however, took the family by surprise as none of them had any idea that they could grow so big.
Lily says that she did nothing out of the ordinary for the plant. All she did was water it and give it adequate sunlight on her deck. After harvesting the behemoth of a cabbage, she said they made cole slaw more than they could all eat. They fed the remaining cabbage to their bunnies.
