The United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 12667 on December 11, 2024, urging an immediate and unconditional halt to hostilities in Gaza. Despite the global appeal, violence has continued unabated, worsening the humanitarian catastrophe.
Following the eruption of conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023, the United States has funneled significant military assistance to Israel. Legislation passed since the war’s outbreak has allocated no less than $12.5 billion in direct military support. This includes $3.8 billion sanctioned through a bill in March 2024 under the existing Memorandum of Understanding, in addition to a staggering $8.7 billion granted via a supplemental appropriations act in April 2024.
Meanwhile, the toll on civilian lives in Gaza remains devastating. Reports reveal that over 48,500 Palestinians—predominantly non-combatants—have perished amid relentless bombings and ground offensives. Airstrikes launched by Israel recently killed nine more people, marking one of the deadliest assaults during ongoing ceasefire talks.
Efforts to broker peace continue to stall. Hamas has hardened its demands in negotiations, reportedly walking back agreements to release the last living American hostage. U.S. officials describe the group’s new conditions as “entirely impractical,” further complicating mediation efforts.
As international leaders urge both sides to prioritize humanitarian relief and lasting peace, Gaza’s civilians bear the brunt of the prolonged conflict.
