A father has recalled the heartbreaking moment his 11-year-old daughter asked him why she could no longer see, days after she was shot in the head while sitting inside her family’s car in the United States.

Shooting leaves child permanently blind

The incident occurred on January 5 in a parking lot of an apartment complex in Antioch, where the child was struck by a bullet while seated in the vehicle. According to the Antioch Police Department, the family does not appear to have been the intended target of the shooting.

The girl was rushed to a children’s hospital in Oakland, where doctors confirmed that although she can hear and respond to voices, she has lost 100 per cent of her vision.

‘Words no father should hear’

Speaking anonymously to international media, the child’s father said the most painful moment came when his daughter asked him, “Dad, why can’t I see?” He described the experience as emotionally devastating, adding that hearing those words felt like his “heart was being ripped out”.

Family members said the child remains responsive but faces a long and uncertain road to recovery, requiring extensive medical care, rehabilitation and emotional support.

Family forced to relocate

The girl’s aunt, Anahi Ramirez, said the family remains in shock and is struggling to cope with the trauma of the incident. With the suspect still at large, the family has decided to relocate for safety, fearing possible retaliation.

Police have identified a 23-year-old suspect in the case through surveillance footage, forensic evidence and witness statements. Authorities have warned that the accused should be considered armed and dangerous.

Investigation ongoing

Law enforcement officials have reiterated that the shooting appears to have been random, intensifying public concern over gun violence affecting innocent families. The investigation is ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions globally about child safety and community violence, underscoring the profound and lasting impact such crimes leave on families
