Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his condolences on Sunday regarding the passing of Ratan Tata, the former chairperson of the Tata Group, who died on October 9 at the age of 86. In a heartfelt post on X, Netanyahu addressed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting Tata’s significant contributions to India and his role in strengthening ties between Israel and India.
“I and many in Israel mourn the loss of Ratan Naval Tata, a proud son of India and a champion of the friendship between our two countries,” Netanyahu wrote, extending his sympathies to Tata’s family while praising the industrialist’s enduring legacy. This statement reflects the respect and admiration Tata garnered internationally for his work and influence.
Ratan Tata passed away at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, where he had been admitted due to age-related ailments. His funeral was held with state honours, symbolising the profound impact he had on both industry and philanthropy throughout his remarkable life.
Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, Tata was not only celebrated for his business acumen but also for his extensive philanthropic efforts. Under his leadership as Chairman of Tata Sons, he significantly expanded the Tata Group’s global presence, orchestrating major acquisitions such as Jaguar Land Rover and Tetley. In recognition of his immense contributions to society and industry, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, one of India’s highest civilian honours.

German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann described Tata as a “wonderful person” and a “fantastic entrepreneur.” Having met Tata 15 years prior, Ackermann characterised his death as a significant loss for India, underscoring Tata’s dual role as both a philanthropist and an industrialist.
US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti also reflected on Tata’s influence, noting that Tata was the first person to reach out to him following his nomination as ambassador. Garcetti remarked that Tata’s vision was “as limitless as the horizon” and highlighted his substantial contributions to India and the global community.
French President Emmanuel Macron added his voice to the tributes, stating that Tata’s leadership greatly impacted industries in both India and France. Macron praised Tata for his “humanist vision” and his lifelong commitment to improving society, further emphasising the widespread respect Tata earned across various sectors.
