Heavy downpours continued to wreak havoc in some parts of Pakistan over the past week, resulting in at least 87 deaths and 82 injuries from separate rain-related incidents, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
According to the Xinhua news agency, the NDMA said on Friday that 2,715 houses nationwide have been partially or completely damaged by the rains. It also stated that the majority of fatalities were caused by structural collapse, lightning strikes, and flash floods.
Most of the damages and casualties were reported from the country’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 36 people lost their lives and 53 others sustained injuries due to torrential rains, followed by the eastern Punjab province, which has reported 25 deaths and eight injuries, according to the NDMA.
A total of 15 people were killed and 10 others injured in the southwestern Balochistan province, whereas 11 people died with 11 others injured due to heavy rains in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir during the period, said the NDMA.
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, has expressed his profound grief and sorrow over the loss of precious lives and property as a result of the recent heavy rains. He has advised the relevant departments to expedite work on opening roads that have been closed due to landslides and rains, as well as to speed up relief efforts in the affected areas.
The NDMA said in its weather prediction report earlier on Friday that the current rains would last until April 22 and that flash floods might occur in a number of the nation’s regions as a result of the anticipated rainfall.
