Kathmandu:The devastating glacial collapse and flash floods near the Nepal-China border have renewed concerns over the vulnerability of the Hindu Kush Himalayas, with UN climate chief Simon Stiell warning that mountain environments are becoming increasingly fragile.
Stiell, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, said scientists and local communities had been warning for years about the risks facing the region. He linked the increasing frequency and severity of such disasters to a warming climate driven by continued fossil-fuel use.
The disaster has caused widespread destruction across parts of Nepal and Tibet, with hundreds of people killed or reported missing and major damage to roads, bridges, settlements and hydropower infrastructure. The World Meteorological Organization said preliminary assessments suggest that an ice-and-rock avalanche near the China-Nepal border may have triggered the devastating flood.
Climate change is increasing mountain risks
The Hindu Kush Himalayas are particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures, changing snow and ice conditions and unstable mountain slopes. The WMO has warned that these changes can increase the risk of glacial lake outburst floods and other cascading mountain hazards.
The recent disaster also demonstrated how rapidly mountain hazards can develop. According to the WMO, water levels in parts of the Trishuli River rose by several metres within just 30 minutes, leaving downstream communities with very little time to respond.
Stronger climate action needed
Stiell stressed that solutions remain available, particularly through a faster transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy and greater investment in climate resilience.
The disaster has also reinforced the importance of stronger early-warning systems, scientific monitoring and cooperation across Himalayan borders. As climate pressures intensify, protecting mountain communities will require both urgent climate action and better preparedness for rapidly evolving hazards.
