In a deeply disturbing incident from Samut Prakan, near Bangkok, Thailand, a monitor lizard was discovered partially devouring the body of a newborn baby, sparking shock and outrage nationwide. Authorities believe the child may have been abandoned and are urgently searching for the mother.
The gruesome discovery occurred around noon on Tuesday, when local resident Kittisak Phongphipat spotted the 2-metre reptile gripping what he first thought was a fish. On closer inspection, he realized it was the mangled body of a baby. “I felt sick to my stomach,” he told Thai Examiner. “The baby had been torn to pieces.”
Police and rescue volunteers arrived to find the lizard still clutching the infant’s remains. The head had already been separated from the body, lying nearby on the road. Rescuers attempted to retrieve the lower half, but the lizard dragged it under a house.
The body, reportedly too decomposed to determine its gender, was sent for autopsy. Authorities suspect it had been left for over two days. DNA testing is underway to identify the mother and determine if the baby was stillborn or alive when abandoned.
Police chief Preecha Damrongwong condemned the incident as criminal and promised serious charges if it is proven the baby was left alive. Investigators suspect the mother may have been unable to care for the child or could be an undocumented migrant.
“This shook our whole community,” said Supansa Rattanachai, a local vendor. “How could anyone leave a baby like that?”
