The Government of India has reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy as the ongoing conflict in Iran and the Gulf region entered its fourth day, raising serious concerns over civilian safety and the security of Indian nationals in the region.
In its second official statement since the escalation began on February 28, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasised the need for restraint and peaceful resolution of tensions.
India expresses deep concern
Referring to its earlier statement, the MEA said India had already urged all sides to avoid escalation and prioritise the protection of civilians.
“We had expressed our deep concern at the commencement of the conflict in Iran and the Gulf region on 28 February 2026. Even at that time, India had urged all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation and prioritise the safety of civilians,” the statement said.
The ministry noted that the situation has deteriorated significantly in recent days, even as the region observes the holy month of Ramadan.
Indian nationals affected by conflict
The government acknowledged that some Indian nationals have died while others remain missing amid the recent attacks in the region.
According to official estimates, nearly one crore Indian citizens live and work in Gulf countries, making the safety of the Indian diaspora a major concern.
“Already, some Indian nationals have lost their lives or are missing as a result of such attacks in the last few days. The destruction and deaths have mounted, even as normal life and economic activities come to a halt,” the MEA said.
Safety of Indians a priority
India described itself as a proximate neighbour with strong stakes in the region, highlighting the importance of stability for its citizens, trade routes and energy supplies.
The government also expressed concern about attacks on merchant shipping, which have affected maritime trade in the region.
“In this background, India strongly reiterates its call for dialogue and diplomacy. We raise our voice clearly in favour of an early end to the conflict,” the statement added.
Diplomatic engagement underway
The MEA said Indian embassies and consulates across the region remain in constant contact with Indian nationals and community organisations.
They are issuing regular advisories and providing assistance to those affected by the conflict.
The government also confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar have held discussions with counterparts in the region and other global partners to monitor developments.
Government monitoring situation
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Modi, has reviewed the situation and directed authorities to take all necessary steps to assist Indian citizens in the Gulf.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also stated that the Centre is fully prepared to evacuate Indians stranded in the region if required, while continuing coordination with Indian missions abroad.
Officials said the government will continue to closely monitor the evolving situation and take appropriate decisions in the national interest.
