Iran: An Indian crew member was killed and eight others were injured after two United Arab Emirates (UAE) oil tankers were hit by Iranian cruise missiles in the Strait of Hormuz, marking a serious escalation in tensions in one of the world’s busiest maritime routes.

Indian sailor killed, eight injured

According to the UAE Ministry of Defence, the two oil tankers, Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, were targeted on Tuesday while sailing through the southern lane of the Strait of Hormuz in Omani territorial waters.

The ministry confirmed that the deceased Indian crew member was aboard the Mombasa, while eight other Indian nationals sustained injuries in the attack. The condition of the injured crew members has not yet been officially disclosed.

Attack raises concerns over maritime security

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategically important shipping lanes, carrying a significant share of global oil exports. Any attack in the region raises concerns over international trade, energy supplies and the safety of commercial shipping.

The missile strike is the latest development in the growing regional tensions involving Iran and Gulf nations. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid fears of further disruptions to maritime traffic.

Investigation underway

The UAE Ministry of Defence said investigations into the attack are ongoing, while maritime security agencies continue to assess the impact of the incident. Further details regarding the victims, the extent of damage to the vessels and possible diplomatic responses are expected in the coming days.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by seafarers navigating conflict-prone waters and renewed calls for enhanced international measures to safeguard commercial vessels operating in the region.
