Jerusalem: Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, the Indian embassy in Israel marked the 78th Independence Day with a virtual celebration. Ambassador Sanjeev Singla led the event from his residence, hoisting the national flag in the presence of embassy staff. The Indian community in Israel joined the celebration via social media links provided by the mission.
Diplomatic Stance on Gaza Conflict
Ambassador Singla reaffirmed India’s strong condemnation of the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. At the same time, he highlighted India’s concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and reiterated the call for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. “We have emphasised an early and peaceful resolution of the conflict in Gaza, including the release of all the hostages,” Singla stated.
Guidance for Indian Community
The Ambassador advised the Indian community to stay vigilant, adhere to Home Command instructions, limit unnecessary movement, and follow advisories through the mission’s social media channels.
Bilateral Relations and Cooperation
Singla highlighted the ongoing robust bilateral ties between India and Israel, which have been maintained over the past year. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli leaders, including President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have remained in regular contact. The continued cooperation was further evidenced by high-level visits, including those of Israel’s Minister of Transport Miri Regev to India and India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval to Israel.
Honouring Community Contributions
The Ambassador expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pravasi Divas Samman awardees Prof. Lael Anson Best and Sheikh Md. Munir Ansari, who had made significant contributions to the Indian community in Israel. He also commended the Indian Cultural Centre for its role in promoting Indian culture through regular events and programmes in Israel.
The virtual celebration underscored India’s commitment to navigating regional complexities while strengthening bilateral relations with Israel and supporting its diaspora.
