Islamabad: Pakistan has turned its capital into a high-security zone as it prepares to host crucial talks between the United States and Iran, amid heightened regional tensions.
Multi-layered security lockdown
The city’s high-security Red Zone, which houses key government offices and foreign missions, has been completely sealed off. Movement restrictions have been imposed, allowing only official vehicles.
Major roads, including routes leading to Nur Khan Airbase and Airport Road, have been blocked with containers and barbed wire. Several residential areas, such as Shah Khalid Colony and Airport Housing Society, are also facing strict access controls.
Authorities have declared a two-day local holiday to minimise public movement and ensure smooth logistics for the visiting delegations.
Delegations begin arrival
A 30-member advance team from the United States has already reached Islamabad to assess on-ground arrangements. Senior officials are expected to follow shortly.
Iran has also confirmed its participation, with its delegation set to arrive for what it described as “serious talks” based on proposed negotiation points.
On the US side, the delegation is expected to be led by Vice President JD Vance, along with senior envoys including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Talks aimed at long-term peace
The discussions are expected to go beyond immediate ceasefire concerns and focus on a broader roadmap for long-term stability.
Key issues likely to be addressed include:
- Sanctions relief
- Regional security dynamics
- Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes
The talks come at a sensitive time, with tensions escalating following reported Israeli strikes in Lebanon, which have drawn strong reactions from Iranian leadership.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that such actions could undermine diplomatic efforts, signalling caution ahead of negotiations.
Pakistan’s mediation role
Pakistan’s leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, has reviewed the country’s role as a mediator.
Both leaders emphasised the importance of maintaining de-escalation and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
Officials stated that Pakistan is prepared to extend full support to ensure the success of the talks and help both nations move toward a negotiated settlement.
Conclusion
With Islamabad under tight security and global attention focused on the talks, the upcoming US–Iran dialogue could prove pivotal. While challenges remain, the discussions offer a crucial opportunity to ease tensions and work toward a more stable regional future.
