A Japan Airlines aircraft struck a stationary Delta Airlines plane during taxiing at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport on Wednesday morning.

A widely shared video captures the moment the Japan Airlines plane’s wingtip pierced the tail of Delta Flight 1921. While the impact wasn’t forceful, it caused noticeable damage.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that Japan Airlines Flight 68’s right wing “made contact” with Delta’s aircraft. Initial reports suggested both planes were moving, but airport officials later confirmed that only the Japan Airlines plane was in motion.

Delta’s flight was scheduled to depart for Puerto Vallarta with 142 passengers when the incident occurred. Meanwhile, the Japan Airlines flight had just completed its journey from Tokyo.

Delta acknowledged the event, explaining that while in the deicing sequence, the tail of its Boeing 737 was struck by another airline’s aircraft. The airline reassured that no passengers or crew were injured and apologized for the disruption.

The FAA clarified that the area where the minor collision happened was not under air traffic control at the time. While the accident briefly interrupted some flights, airport authorities confirmed it had only a “minimal impact” on overall operations.
