Amman: Jordan is stepping up preparations for a major Christian milestone as Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II visited the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, known as Bethany Beyond the Jordan or Al-Maghtas, ahead of the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus’ Baptism in 2030.
Focus on pilgrims and the historic site
During his September 14 visit, the Crown Prince reviewed the services available to pilgrims and visitors and issued directives aimed at improving their experience at the sacred site.
He also stressed the importance of carefully planning the 2030 commemorations so that they reflect the religious and historical significance of Jesus’ Baptism and further promote Jordan as a destination for Christian pilgrimage.
The Crown Prince called for greater international promotion of the Baptism Site in coordination with Jordan’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the Jordan Tourism Board and other relevant institutions.
The site, traditionally identified with the place where John the Baptist baptised Jesus, contains archaeological remains including churches, chapels, hermits’ caves and a baptistery. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
Looking towards a historic Christian anniversary
Jordan has already begun broader preparations for the 2030 milestone. In May, King Abdullah II directed the government to support the Baptism 2030 initiative and focus on improving infrastructure and operational services at the site.
The Vatican has also highlighted the spiritual significance of commemorating 2,000 years since Jesus’ Baptism, describing the occasion as an opportunity to promote messages of peace, mercy and fraternity.
Three popes — St John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis — have visited the Baptism Site during pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
