A reckless late-night joyride in southern Kazakhstan ended abruptly after a speeding car crashed into a large Christmas tree in the central square of Saryagash, knocking the festive installation to the ground. The dramatic incident was captured on CCTV and has since circulated widely online.

CCTV captures dangerous stunts

Surveillance footage from the square shows the driver entering the largely deserted area in the early hours of the morning and performing tight circular manoeuvres, commonly known as “donuts”. The vehicle, identified later as a VAZ-2105 Lada, can be seen screeching across the pavement as it narrowly avoided street furniture and decorations.

As the driver attempted a second consecutive spin, the car swung wider than before and headed straight towards a towering Christmas tree, estimated to be around 40 feet tall, positioned at the centre of the square.

Tree flattened, driver flees

The vehicle slammed into the illuminated tree with force, sending it crashing to the ground as decorative lights scattered across the square. The impact flattened the festive display almost instantly. Moments later, the driver sped away from the scene, leaving the damaged tree lying flat on the pavement.

Witnesses told local media that the sound of screeching tyres echoed through the square shortly before the crash, drawing attention to the dangerous behaviour.

Police trace driver using CCTV

According to Saryagash district police, officers received a report around 3 am about the collision involving the town’s main Christmas tree. Investigators reviewed footage from nearby CCTV cameras and were able to identify the driver and the vehicle involved.

Police later confirmed that the car had been impounded and that the driver was fined for dangerous driving. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Ordered to repair the damage

In an unusual outcome, authorities also directed the driver to repair the damage caused to the holiday installation. Police said the young man complied, restoring the Christmas tree and pledging not to repeat such behaviour in the future.

The incident has sparked discussion online about reckless driving and public safety, particularly during the festive season, when public spaces are decorated and attract families and visitors.
