Judge Frank Caprio, the Rhode Island jurist celebrated worldwide for his kindness and empathy in the courtroom, passed away at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer.

Caprio, who gained global recognition through viral clips of his thoughtful judgments on the show Caught in Providence, was admired for blending fairness with compassion. His unique style of justice won him millions of admirers across the world.

Just hours before his passing, Caprio posted a heartfelt message on Instagram from the hospital, acknowledging a setback in his health. “Unfortunately, I’ve had a setback. I’m back in the hospital now and I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more,” he shared.

In a statement, his family described him as a man of humility and deep faith in humanity. “Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched countless lives. His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark,” they said. They also remembered him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, whose legacy will endure.

Diagnosed in November 2023, Caprio underwent six months of chemotherapy and five rounds of radiation. In May 2024, he celebrated the end of treatment by ringing the bell of healing at the Miami Cancer Institute, greeted with applause from loved ones and medical staff.

From local TV to international fame, Judge Caprio’s legacy remains one of justice delivered with heart and humanity.
