Organizers of the London Marathon announced on Sunday that this year’s event set a new world record for the most finishers, surpassing the previous record of 55,646 set during the New York City Marathon in 2024. Although the final tally was not yet available, they confirmed that the new record was established at 6:35 p.m. (1735 GMT) while participants were still crossing the finish line.

Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe claimed victory in the men’s elite race, while Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa made history by breaking the women’s-only world record. Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, expressed his excitement, stating, “The TCS London Marathon is the world’s greatest marathon, and it is now officially the world’s biggest marathon.”

The race, spanning the iconic 42.195 km, started at Greenwich Park, followed the River Thames, and concluded on The Mall. A total of 56,000 runners had been expected to participate, marking a historic moment for the event.
