Amid the chaos of the ongoing fires in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center has transformed into a crucial shelter for animals in need. Hundreds of horses, donkeys, miniature horses, and other animals have been brought to the facility, escaping the ravaging Eaton and Palisades fires. Volunteers and rescuers have worked tirelessly to care for them, offering both emotional and physical support as the animals find refuge.
The center has sheltered over 200 horses, with more arriving daily, on top of the 500 animals already residing there. Many animals were brought in by their owners, while others were rescued and brought by animal control officers. One of the heartwarming stories came from Sergio Marcial and Jenny Bacon, who heroically rescued over 70 animals, including two miniature horses named Arthur and Playboy, despite the dangerous conditions.
The community’s efforts have been overwhelming, with dozens of volunteers stepping in to help, some even forming deep bonds with the animals. Morris and Mika, two donkeys, have become local celebrities, delighting visitors with their need for attention and love. For some volunteers, the opportunity to witness owners reunite with their animals has been a rewarding experience, providing moments of peace amidst the tragedy.
While most of the sheltered animals have been reunited with their owners, others, like the miniature horse Izzy, are still waiting to find their homes. As the fires continue to rage, the Los Angeles Equestrian Center remains a symbol of hope and resilience for the animals and their devoted caretakers.
