A missing hiker survived for 11 days in a remote North Carolina wilderness area before two kayakers heard his cries for help and alerted authorities, bringing an end to a desperate search.

Hiker disappears during outdoor trip

Craig Berg became stranded after becoming lost in a swampy and heavily wooded area. His mobile phone was also lost, leaving him unable to call for help or provide rescuers with his location.

As the days passed, Berg relied on the limited supplies he had with him. He survived on freeze-dried food and water he described as extremely unpleasant, while continuing to look for a way out.

The difficult terrain made the search particularly challenging, with thick vegetation and waterways limiting access to parts of the area.

Kayakers hear desperate cries

After 11 days alone, Berg’s situation changed when two kayakers were travelling through the area.

They heard someone shouting for help and realised that a person could be stranded nearby. Their discovery provided rescuers with the crucial information needed to locate Berg.

The kayakers alerted authorities, and emergency teams were able to reach the missing hiker and bring him to safety.

Survival brings relief after long search

Berg’s rescue brought relief after more than a week of uncertainty. His experience also highlighted the difficulties faced by people who become lost in remote wilderness areas, particularly when communication equipment is unavailable.

For 11 days, his repeated calls for help went unanswered. It was ultimately the chance presence of two kayakers that led rescuers to him.

The rescue serves as a reminder of how quickly conditions can become dangerous during outdoor adventures and the importance of carrying appropriate communication and navigation equipment when travelling through isolated terrain.
