Male: Three ministers in the Maldives have been suspended for making disrespectful comments about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media. The suspended officials, identified as Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid, are deputy ministers from the Youth Ministry. This action comes after opposition leaders criticized their use of “appalling language” against PM Modi.

The Maldivian government, in a statement, clarified that these remarks are “personal” and do not reflect the official stance of the government. The move follows a recent social media dispute where a minister and other leaders in the Maldives used derogatory language against PM Modi after he shared a video of himself on a pristine beach in Lakshadweep.

The government emphasized its commitment to swiftly address individuals on social media whose conduct undermines international relations. It warned that authorities will not hesitate to take action against those making derogatory remarks. This development has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some praising the government’s swift action, while others express concern over potential strain in diplomatic relations between the Maldives and India.

Former Maldivian president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih condemned the “hateful language” against India, emphasizing the longstanding friendship between the two countries. Other political figures, including former president Mohamed Nasheed and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, also criticized the remarks and urged the government to distance itself from such comments.

This incident unfolds amid strained relations between the Maldives and India, with President Mohamed Muizzu’s government signaling a shift in diplomatic priorities. As the controversy continues, observers are keenly watching the potential impact on diplomatic ties between the Maldives and its key maritime neighbor, India.
