Man throws dog from car in middle of highway, passerby calls 911
Authorities in Indiana have filed criminal charges following a disturbing incident where a dog was transported in an unsafe manner on a busy highway.
The Indiana State Police (ISP) were alerted on Tuesday after a viral Facebook post showed an SUV towing an open utility trailer on I-80/94. Inside the trailer, a kennel sat unsecured, containing a large tan-and-black dog that appeared visibly distressed.
A concerned citizen who witnessed the situation quickly called 911 to report the animal’s condition. Additionally, a local journalist forwarded the social media post to ISP, prompting further investigation.
Following up on the case, a detective tracked the endangered dog to a property in Gary. It was found abandoned near a former residence of the vehicle’s owner.
With the help of an ISP K-9 handler, officers managed to approach the anxious dog, gain its trust, and safely remove it from the area.
Later that evening, authorities identified and questioned the suspected owner. The ISP confirmed that charges of animal cruelty have been submitted to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office against a 37-year-old resident. If the charges receive approval, the individual’s identity will be publicly disclosed.
Currently, the rescued canine is under the care of a foster family, receiving much-needed medical attention and rehabilitation.
