Eleven passengers aboard a charter flight endured injuries when the plane encountered severe turbulence on its route from Barbados to Manchester. The incident occurred on Sunday, forcing the pilots of the P&O Caribbean Cruise to divert the flight with 225 passengers to Bermuda. Fortunately, all thirteen crew members on the plane emerged unharmed.
Maleth Aero Flight 1975, departing from Barbados, was delayed by an hour from its schedule and was expected to reach Manchester shortly before 6 am on December 24. At an altitude of 38,000 feet, the Airbus plane encountered intense “clear-air turbulence,” prompting the pilots to reroute the plane to the nearest airport, Bermuda’s LF Wade International Airport. The emergency landing took place five hours later on Christmas Eve.
Bermuda’s acting minister of National Security, Owen Darrell, expressed gratitude for the quick response of emergency services personnel and emphasized their commitment to ensuring the well-being of all involved.
A passenger described the frightening experience, stating that the plane “just kept dropping” during the turbulence. The incident lasted for about five seconds, briefly stopped, and then repeated for another five seconds. Despite the scare, the woman, who was not named, reported that she and others on the flight were relieved to have landed safely.
Following the emergency diversion, the passengers spent Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and most of Boxing Day in Bermuda. P&O Cruises arranged accommodation for the passengers in a hotel, and of the 11 injured individuals, nine were discharged from the hospital within a day.
