Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney joined devotees at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto, marking the onset of Ram Navami festivities. The festival, which spans nine days, is also known as Ram Navratri and culminates in celebrating the birth of Lord Ram, a central figure in Hinduism. The initial days pay homage to Goddess Durga and her nine manifestations, collectively referred to as Navdurga.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Carney shared his gratitude: “Had the pleasure of joining the Hindu community at @BAPS_Toronto for the start of Ram Navami. Grateful for the warm welcome and cultural insight. Wishing everyone a joyful Ram Navami!”
His attendance was warmly acknowledged by Cabinet Minister Anita Anand, who posted photos from the event, stating: “Delighted to have @MarkJCarney visit @baps_toronto and celebrate Lord Rama’s birth. Happy Ram Navami to all!”
Carney’s temple visit has also revived important discussions around the visibility and voice of the Hindu community in Canadian society. The Hindu Canadian Foundation emphasized that while the community exceeds one million members, their low-profile presence often results in limited political influence. The Foundation noted that despite being law-abiding, well-assimilated, and among the top earners, Hindus remain underrepresented.
It also raised concerns over a growing wave of anti-Hindu rhetoric, allegedly linked to separatist agendas, urging future leadership to address these escalating issues.
With elections just around the corner on April 28, Carney’s symbolic gesture is seen as timely and significant.
