Former Pentagon official Michael Rubin has equated the recent attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam to the October 7 attacks by Hamas in Israel. He pointed out that the assailants targeted specific religious groups, just as Hamas attacked Jewish communities, particularly the more liberal ones seeking peace. Rubin suggested that Pakistan is attempting a similar strategy by targeting middle-class Hindus at a popular tourist spot, aiming to provoke tension within the region.

Rubin also called for India to retaliate against Pakistan in a manner akin to Israel’s approach towards Hamas, advocating for an aggressive stance on dismantling Pakistan’s intelligence network, the ISI. He stressed that India should treat the ISI as a designated terrorist group and encourage global allies to take similar actions.

The comparison was further echoed by former Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Shesh Paul Vaid, who described the attack as a “Pulwama 2.0 moment,” drawing parallels with the Hamas assault. He argued that India should respond similarly to Israel’s actions against Hamas, suggesting a strategic military retaliation.

The Pahalgam attack, which killed 28 people, was carried out by six terrorists who identified their victims by faith before shooting them. This attack, one of the largest since the abrogation of Article 370, took place at Baisaran meadow, a well-known tourist destination, during peak tourist season, despite the presence of heavy security.
