Dubbed the “Egg of the Sun,” the Miyazaki mango is the priciest mango globally, fetching up to Rs 3 lakh per kilogram. Grown under meticulously controlled conditions in Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan, this rare fruit symbolizes luxury and exclusivity.
This exquisite mango, weighing between 350-550 grams, stands out with its ruby-red hue, fiberless texture, and intense sweetness. Its fragrant aroma further enhances its royal appeal. The mango’s premium quality results from selective breeding tailored to Japan’s unique climate in the mid-20th century.
The cultivation process is highly labor-intensive. Farmers hand-pollinate flowers and individually wrap each fruit to protect it from pests and damage. Every stage, from planting to harvest, undergoes careful monitoring to ensure only top-tier produce reaches the market.
Due to its scarcity and rising demand, Miyazaki mangoes have made their way to India. In 2021, farmer Surendra Singh from Bihar successfully cultivated the fruit after importing two saplings from Japan. His trees produced 21 mangoes in their first year, marking a promising start for domestic Miyazaki mango farming.
With its unparalleled taste, rich color, and rarity, this luxury fruit remains a global sensation. But is it worth the hefty price tag? That’s a question only a taste test can answer!
