Rescue operations are in full swing in Mandalay, as teams work tirelessly following a massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck central Myanmar. The catastrophe has left behind an immense trail of destruction, with at least 694 fatalities confirmed by the military. The U.S. Geological Survey has warned that the death toll may surpass 10,000.
The quake’s tremors were felt far and wide, shaking Bangkok, nearly 900 km away, where it led to the collapse of several structures, including bridges and an unfinished skyscraper. Thailand has reported 10 casualties, while over 100 construction workers remain missing in Bangkok. The earthquake’s impact extended to northeastern India, Bangladesh, and parts of China.
Survivors have shared heart-wrenching accounts of the disaster. A man recounted being rescued from debris, only to seek shelter in another building that collapsed in a powerful aftershock. “My grandmother, aunt, and uncles are still missing. Their survival is unlikely,” he said.
Responding swiftly, India launched ‘Operation Brahma’, sending 15 tonnes of relief supplies via an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft. China and Russia have also deployed rescue teams, while U.S. President Donald Trump pledged assistance despite budget constraints on USAID.
Experts attribute the catastrophe to the Sagaing fault line, known for past high-magnitude quakes. With Myanmar already battling civil conflict, affected areas now struggle with power blackouts and severe water shortages.
