Myanmar has reportedly expelled more than 50,000 illegal foreigners between October 2023 and August 2024, according to a recent report from state-run media. A total of 54,433 individuals from 28 different countries and regions were deported in this period, following established legal procedures.

The report highlights Myanmar’s ongoing efforts to manage its borders and maintain national security. This mass deportation reflects the government’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws and addressing concerns related to illegal foreign presence in the country.

During a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the Myanmar Police Force Day on Tuesday, Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of Myanmar’s State Administration Council, announced the establishment of a network of Border Liaison Offices (BLOs) with five neighbouring countries. This initiative aims to enhance the collection and sharing of information regarding cross-border movements, thereby enabling more effective action against cross-border crimes.

Hlaing emphasised the importance of holding regular meetings among these BLOs to facilitate timely communication and information exchange. This collaborative approach is intended to strengthen regional security and combat illegal activities more efficiently.

The deportation of illegal foreigners and the establishment of BLOs indicate Myanmar’s proactive stance on immigration control and border security. As the country continues to implement these measures, it is likely to enhance its ability to monitor and manage cross-border activities while fostering cooperation with neighbouring nations.
