New York City, July 31, 2025: A compelling speech by Rohan D’Souza, Board Member of Eyes Open International (EOI), at the 19th International Human Rights Summit held at the United Nations Headquarters has inspired renewed momentum among global youth towards combating human trafficking through education and awareness.
The summit, hosted by United for Human Rights and Youth for Human Rights International, brought together delegates from over 70 countries. Rohan’s standout contribution came during the panel discussion, “From Commitment to Action – Making Human Rights a Reality.”
Rohan’s message: Leadership without a title
“You don’t need to wear a title to be a leader. All you need is the courage to speak for those who can’t,” Rohan said in his address, striking a chord with youth delegates and policymakers alike. Drawing from his Indian roots and American upbringing, Rohan highlighted the transformative power of education in vulnerable communities. He stressed how education—both formal and informal—serves as a shield against exploitation.
Representing EOI, an NGO focused on fighting trafficking through education and empowerment, Rohan emphasised the organisation’s grassroots programmes in schools, universities, and community hubs that teach individuals to identify trafficking tactics and embrace legal migration pathways.
Nepal visit reveals disturbing realities
One of the most poignant moments in his address came when Rohan shared experiences from his recent work in Nepal. There, he met with families of young men lured under false pretences into overseas jobs linked to the Russia-Ukraine war—only to later disappear. His account highlighted the sophisticated methods traffickers use to prey on desperation, often cloaking exploitation as opportunity.
Praise from human rights leaders
Following his speech, Dr. Mary Shuttleworth, President of United for Human Rights, lauded Rohan’s impact:
“Rohan, your presence and contributions brought tremendous depth, perspective, and inspiration to the event.”
She added that his words helped underscore how human rights education must not only inform but also protect, particularly in communities at risk of trafficking.
Energising the next generation
Rohan’s call for action had a lasting effect on the young delegates at the summit. “Thanks to Rohan’s support,” said Dr. Shuttleworth, “our International Youth Delegates have returned home with renewed energy and purpose.” She described him as “a true testament to the power of his message.”
EOI’s efforts were visible throughout the event, focusing on survivor leadership, legal migration strategies, and community-led education. The summit—co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Timor-Leste to the UN—also featured panels and workshops exploring systemic injustice and the role of youth in driving change.
Conclusion
Rohan D’Souza’s presence at the summit served as a stirring reminder that age is no barrier to advocacy. With clarity, compassion, and courage, he is proving that youth can be powerful agents in dismantling global exploitation systems—one empowered voice at a time.
