Kolkata:
A medical student from Odisha was allegedly gang-raped in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, prompting the state police to initiate a detailed investigation. The incident has triggered outrage and renewed calls for stronger safety measures for women, especially those pursuing education away from home.
Incident and police response
According to police officials, the assault occurred earlier this week when the 22-year-old student, who was studying in a Kolkata-based medical college, had travelled to North 24 Parganas for personal work. She was allegedly abducted and raped by a group of men in a secluded area.
After managing to reach safety, the survivor filed a complaint with the local police. A medical examination was conducted, and her statement was recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before a magistrate.
Superintendent of Police (Barasat) confirmed that multiple teams have been formed to identify and trace the accused based on initial clues and CCTV footage. “We are verifying all aspects of the complaint and have taken samples for forensic analysis,” the officer said.
Arrests and investigation details
Police sources said two suspects have been detained for questioning, while a search is underway for others believed to be involved. Authorities have also sought digital evidence and mobile tower data from the area to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Senior officers have stated that the investigation will be monitored closely to ensure transparency and swift action. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rape (Section 376D) and abduction.
Public and official reaction
The incident has sparked widespread condemnation across West Bengal and Odisha. Women’s rights activists have demanded that the government expedite trials in such cases to ensure justice.
Odisha Chief Minister’s Office has reportedly sought updates from its West Bengal counterpart regarding the safety of students from the state.
In Kolkata, several student organisations held protests outside the college, calling for increased security measures, including better street lighting and stricter monitoring of public transport routes.
Safety concerns and preventive steps
Authorities have assured that police patrols will be strengthened in sensitive zones, especially around educational institutions. The state government is also considering installing more CCTV cameras in areas with a history of harassment complaints.
Experts have reiterated the importance of awareness campaigns for students relocating to new cities and the creation of emergency response cells for women.
Ongoing case
As of now, the survivor is under medical care and counselling, while the police continue to collect forensic evidence. Officials have assured that the case will be fast-tracked once the charge sheet is filed.
The shocking incident has reignited debate over women’s safety and the urgent need for systemic reforms to prevent such crimes.
