The Indian men’s hockey team has clinched a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, marking their second consecutive Olympic bronze. This achievement is not just a source of national pride but highlights the significant role played by the state of Odisha in the resurgence of Indian hockey.
Odisha’s involvement with Indian hockey began in 2018 when the state government, under former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, became the official sponsor of both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams. This support came at a critical time when the sport was facing financial difficulties following Sahara’s departure as the primary sponsor.
Patnaik celebrated the team’s success, expressing deep pride and personal emotion. “Indeed a historic and very, very special moment for India. The Indian team’s historic medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 has swelled every Indian’s heart in pride. It is also a deeply emotional moment for me personally. May this bring back the halcyon days for hockey, bringing more and more laurels for the country,” he posted on X.
Patnaik’s personal connection to the sport, having been a hockey goalkeeper during his school days, and his strategic support have been transformative for Indian hockey. Odisha has earned the reputation of being the “hockey capital” of India due to its substantial investment and support.
The state committed ₹120 crore to hockey, with the deal initially extended for ten years and then further extended to 2036 under the current Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. This long-term commitment underscores Odisha’s dedication to the sport.
Beyond financial support, Odisha has significantly contributed to hockey infrastructure. The state has developed the world’s largest hockey stadium in Rourkela, which has a seating capacity of 20,000. This stadium, situated in Sundargarh district—the cradle of Indian hockey—has hosted major events such as the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup in 2018 and 2023. Additionally, Odisha has organized international tournaments like the FIH Men’s Series Finals in 2019 and the Olympic Hockey Qualifiers in the same year, providing top-notch facilities for training and competition.
The state’s ongoing support is expected to be pivotal for the future of Indian hockey. With continued investment and infrastructure development, Odisha is laying a strong foundation for the sport’s growth. As India celebrates its Olympic success, the state’s role in nurturing and promoting hockey both nationally and internationally is a significant factor in this achievement.
The Indian men’s hockey team’s success at the Paris 2024 Olympics is a testament to the enduring support and commitment from Odisha, which has played a critical role in the sport’s resurgence and ongoing success.
